Vernonia man dies in three-car crash on Highway 26

- A Vernonia man died in a head-on collision on Highway 26 Tuesday, April 29.
A Vernonia man died in a head-on crash on Highway 26 caused by unsafe passing and speeding.
At about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 56-year-old Michael L. Skillin of Vernonia was driving westbound on Highway 26 in a red Ford F-350 near milepost 16 in Clatsop County, according to a press release from the Oregon State Police.
Skillin attempted to pass multiple semi trucks and crashed head-on into a white Ford F-350 driving eastbound. The driver of the white F-350 then crashed into the trailer of a westbound semi truck.
Skillin was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 9-year-old girl riding as a passenger in his car was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the white Ford F-350 was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries, and the semi truck driver was uninjured.
The highway was impacted for more than six hours as police investigated the cause of the crash, which they determined to be unsafe passing and speed.
